HOW TO BECOME A PILOT IN MALAYSIA

1. COMMON QUESTION FOR ASPIRING PILOTS

If you arrived here, it is because you have a passion for flight and many reasons to make your dream come true. Motivation and ambition, self-discipline, technical aptitude, pressure tolerance, maturity for your age, and spatial awareness are all critical attributes of the pilot profile. Explore our Pilot Training Program based on your desired training route and on the necessary eligibility requirements.

2. FIRST OPTION – START WITH PRIVATE PILOT LICENSE (PPL) COURSE

The first option we highly recommend is to start with taking a Private Pilot License (PPL) first.

This is a very safe & economical route. You will gain valuable insight and experience as a leisure or commercial pilot.  Upon obtaining your PPL, you could continue leisure flying or eventually take up a Commercial pilot license (CPL) course if you decide to earn a living as a pilot.

The best part is that up to 45 flying hours flown in your PPL course will be credited to your Commercial pilot license (CPL) course if you decide to pursue your CPL course at a later stage. And when you enroll in the CPL course, you will have a much better understanding of flying and the ground syllabus.

This method is also known as the modular Commercial Pilot License course in some European countries and it is a very popular method as it is financially more flexible. It will cost you around RM70,000 to Rm90,000 for a PPL course and the payment could be staggering depending on your progress at your pace!

3. SECOND OPTION

The second option is finding a way to fund yourself straight for a Commercial pilot license (CPL) course. This can be done by saving up enough money for the course. Some financial institutions do provide financing for the CPL course. But for those who can afford it, have the right aptitude to pass the strict entry exams, and have the right personal skills to work well on the flight deck, becoming a commercial pilot can be incredibly rewarding financially and personally.

You can wait for the airline cadetship to open and apply for it. The selection process is extremely rigorous, with a good academic background. If you are successfully selected, you will be sent for training at an FTO appointed by the airline. The airline will bond you for several years, and you must make monthly repayments to the airline or the financial institution that financed your program.  It will cost you around Rm380,000 to Rm480,000 for an all-in cost to take a Commercial pilot license (CPL) course.

4. WHICH PILOT TRAINING CENTRE TO CHOOSE?

Choosing the right flying school or aviation training center is very crucial. Applicants must ensure the validity of the approved training organization (ATO) and any third-party agents involved during the enrolment process. This is to avoid potential concerns brought by the ATO and third-party agents, such as students registering for training programs not approved by CAAM and other financial-related issues. Such a situation may lead to disruption in the training process and cadet pilots unable to obtain a valid Malaysian, CAAM-issued pilot license.

5. CONSIDER ALL FACTORS

There are a lot of factors to consider. The candidate would often choose the cheapest training center – This is a big mistake!

Cheap training centers are often being compromised with substandard, near scrap quality, 1960s technology training aircraft and facilities used for training! Do not compromise your life just because of this factor being considered! Remember that you are going to spend quite a significant amount of money for flight training, while your aviation life will last for many decades to come

6. SAFETY FIRST

Among the factors to consider in the highest priority is flight safety. You do not want to end up in a cheap flying school or training academy that uses old, poorly maintained aircraft and has substandard facilities. Remember that your life is priceless!

Choose training centers that use modern, state-of-the-art aircraft for training. This is for your safety and to make you a world-class pilot. The other factors are the quality of instructors and the facilities of the Flight Training Centers. Be careful and get your facts right, not just out of convenience and to save money. As the saying goes, penny wise, pound foolish. The end game is to be safe and get your pilot license.
